Both the Royal Parks and the Royal Borough of Greenwich are trialling road closures which will prevent through traffic from using the park or residential roads west of the park. How this will affect Westcombe Park is unclear.

The Royal Parks are implementing their Movement Strategy which means that the park will no longer be open as a through route for traffic.  More information is available here.

At the same time the Royal Borough of Greenwich are implementing traffic reduction measures in West Greenwich with road closures which prevent through traffic cutting through residential streets between the A2 on the heath and Greenwich High Road/Greenwich Town Centre.  More information is available here.

This means that the only routes connecting Greenwich Town Centre/Trafalgar Road/Woolwich Road with the A2 will be via the motorway or through Westcombe Park.

The Westcombe Society are very concerned as to what effect this will have.  We feel the effect will be difficult to measure because both changes are being implemented at the same time.  We are also concerned that, although both trials are for six months, consultation on the effect of the closure of the through route in the park will be consulted on after 3 months.  We feel that any trial needs to run through the winter and also needs to run beyond the time when all businesses return to ‘normal’ working, whenever that may be.

The Westcombe Society Environment committe would welcome resident’s views on this and any changes in traffic levels that residents notice.  Please contact us on environment@westcombesociety.org or via the comments below.
