Independent amenity group
The Westcombe Society is a fully independent amenity group which aims to forge links within the community to make this area a better place for all who live and work here.
We strive to:
- protect and improve services and amenities which impact the local area
- foster relationships amongst residents, councils, businesses, local societies and others who can influence the well being of our community.
Our main areas of focus:
Community
The award winning Westcombe News is a free, monthly newspaper written, produced and delivered to over 4,000 homes and businesses by local volunteers.
Events
We organise a number of activities during the year for all age groups. The income from some of these events helps us to support our Charity of the Year and other Charities.
Environment
We are committed to protecting the character and integrity of Westcombe Park as a green conservation area. We monitor and make representations on local matters including transport, parking, noise and planning applications.
The area covered by the Society lies between Maze Hill (Greenwich Park) to the west and the A102 Blackwall Tunnel Southern Approach to the east, and between Vanbrugh Park/Charlton Road (Blackheath Common) to the south and the Greenwich-Dartford branch of the South-Eastern railway line to the north.
Representation
In the wider community the Westcombe Society is represented on Blackheath Joint Working Party and the Greenwich Planning Alliance. We are stakeholders for Greenwich Park. We also represent our area at forums with the Rail Authorities through our representation on the Greenwich Line Users Group. The Westcombe Society is also a member of the London Forum and HACAN – Clear Skies, an independent organisation representing communities affected by aircraft flying in and out of Heathrow airport.
We have very good working relationships with other local societies and groups including the Blackheath Society, Greenwich Society, Friends of Mycenae Gardens, Friends of Westcombe Woodlands, Friends of Greenwich Park, Friends of Mycenae Gardens, East Greenwich Residents Association, The Charlton Society and the Vanbrugh Community Association.
