TfL advises drivers that the southbound Blackwall Tunnel will be closed tonight, Friday 15 November from 23:00 to 06:00 and from 23:00 on 16 November until 05:00 on Monday 18 November. These closures are to help support carriageway and gantry works on the northbound Blackwall Tunnel approach.
Drivers are advised to plan their routes in advance, checking before they travel so they can consider any other potential traffic impacts or restrictions. Roads and alternative river crossings in east and central London are expected to be extremely busy with traffic around Rotherhithe Tunnel and along the A13 Commercial Road between Canning Town and Whitechapel heavier than normal over the weekends due to the closures. The Woolwich Ferry, which now departs every fifteen minutes, seven days a week, will also be in operation across the weekends. Where possible, people should consider using public transport or walking and cycling via other river crossings to complete their journey.
TfL gives the following information about the 108 bus during the southbound closures:
From 22:00 on Friday 15 until 00:01 on Monday 17 November
Bus 108 will operate a split service:
- Stratford international – Canning Town
- North Greenwich – Lewisham
To cross the river, use Tube and rail services. Auto refunds will be in place for Bus 108 customers who use the Jubilee line between North Greenwich and Canning Town.
From approx 00:01 on Monday 17 November
- Northbound buses will return to their normal line of route
- Southbound buses will be diverted via Tower Bridge
From approx 05:00 Monday 18 November
- Normal services will resume
Work on the Silvertown Tunnel continues to progress. Recently, a planned emergency drill took place within the tunnel, planned closely with the local police and the emergency services, to allow TfL to test various tunnel systems. TfL have also now commenced work on a new timber noise barrier along parts of Westcombe Hill, Siebert Road, and Invicta Road to address pre-existing noise along the western edge of the A102, between the junction with the B210 Charlton Road and the railway viaduct.
The new Silvertown Tunnel which will open in 2025. TfL appreciate that these planned weekend works will have an impact on some drivers and are doing everything in their power to limit potential disruption – including ensuring a northbound route through the Blackwall Tunnel is maintained throughout.
